Eastern Cape

Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)

The Friendly City — beaches, history and the gateway to the Eastern Cape.

Overview

Gqeberha, still widely known as Port Elizabeth or PE, is the Eastern Cape's largest city and the traditional home of many South African families now in the UK. It offers uncrowded beaches along Algoa Bay, a proud sporting heritage, and easy reach of Addo Elephant National Park — one of the best places in the country to see elephants.

When to go

Sunny and mild most of the year, though known for wind. October to April is warmest for the beach; Addo is good in any season.

Things to do

Relax on Hobie and Kings beaches, drive the Donkin Heritage Trail, take a boat trip to see dolphins and whales in Algoa Bay, and spend a day at Addo Elephant National Park.

Food

Fresh calamari and line fish on the Boardwalk, traditional Xhosa dishes, and the region's famous pineapple products from the Sundays River Valley.

Family activities

Addo Elephant National Park, the Kragga Kamma Game Park, SAMREC penguin rescue centre at Cape Recife, and calm family beaches.
