Garden Route

A classic coastal road trip of lagoons, forests and beaches.

Overview

The Garden Route is the stretch of southern coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River, taking in Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley. It is the classic South African family road trip: lagoon swimming, indigenous forest, whale watching and adventure activities along one of the world's great coastal drives.

When to go

A mild, year-round climate. September to April is warmest; whales visit between June and November.

Things to do

Walk the Knysna Heads, canoe the Kaaimans or Touw rivers, meet elephants at a sanctuary, bungee from Bloukrans Bridge, and hike in Tsitsikamma National Park.

Food

Fresh Knysna oysters, farm stalls along the N2, and seafood in Plettenberg Bay — plus excellent country bakeries and cheese stops.

Family activities

Beach days at Wilderness and Plett, the Knysna Elephant Park, Monkeyland and Birds of Eden sanctuaries, and gentle forest walks.
