KwaZulu-Natal
Durban
Warm Indian Ocean beaches and the heart of Indian South African culture.
Overview
Durban is KwaZulu-Natal's coastal capital, famous for its year-round warm water, the Golden Mile beachfront and its large Indian community. uShaka Marine World, the Moses Mabhida Stadium and the Valley of a Thousand Hills are favourites, and the city is the natural starting point for trips to the Drakensberg and the battlefields.
When to go
Genuinely year-round — even midwinter days are mild and the sea stays swimmable. March to May offers warm weather with fewer crowds.
Things to do
Walk or cycle the Golden Mile promenade, visit uShaka Marine World, ride the SkyCar at Moses Mabhida Stadium, and explore the Midlands Meander inland.
Food
Durban is the home of the bunny chow. Also look for fresh seafood on the beachfront, Durban curries, and sugar-cane-country treats up the North Coast.
Family activities
uShaka Sea World and Wet 'n Wild, the Durban Botanic Gardens, Mitchell Park Zoo, and safe swimming beaches with lifeguards along the Golden Mile.
