Western Cape
Cape Town
South Africa's Mother City, set between Table Mountain and the Atlantic.
Overview
Cape Town is where many South Africans grew up holidaying and where many UK-based Saffas still have family. The city combines mountain, beach and winelands within an hour's drive. Table Mountain, Robben Island, the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Point nature reserve are the best-known landmarks, and neighbourhoods like Bo-Kaap, Woodstock and Kalk Bay each have their own character.
When to go
November to March is warm and dry, ideal for beaches. June to August is cooler and wetter but good for whale watching near Hermanus.
Things to do
Take the cableway up Table Mountain, drive Chapman's Peak, visit the penguins at Boulders Beach, and spend a day in the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek winelands.
Food
Try Cape Malay curry in Bo-Kaap, fresh fish in Kalk Bay, biltong and braai everywhere, and world-class restaurants at every price point.
Family activities
Boulders Beach penguins, the Two Oceans Aquarium, Kirstenbosch Gardens, and gentle beaches like Muizenberg with its colourful huts.
